*NOTE* ORIONMNT must be run once *BEFORE* you give the players
access to Orion Outreach. This will initialize the Orion
Outreach database. For details refer to the section OTHER
ORION OUTREACH FILES.

==============
ABOUT THE GAME
==============
ORION OUTREACH is a strategic game of cosmic conquest. The goal is to
expand your sphere of influence until you control the entire playing
area. There are numerous hindrances (like natural hazards and
opposing players). And the Th'rax Hegemony (a.k.a. The Computer).
The players guide describes Orion Outreach from that point of view.
This document outlines operational concerns for the Sysop.
The game supports a maximum of 25 players.
The first player to conquer the entire quadrant is the winner.
Alternatively, the first team to exterminate all opposing or non-team
players is the winner. This may occur BEFORE (considerably!!) the
Th'rax are exterminated.
The game automatically cycles once each day, based on a simple date
comparison. The update process requires about 1 minute on an 8 Mhz
IBM-PC/AT. The sysop may force an update to occur (See the discussion
of the maintenance program later on).
=====================
INSTALLATION CONCERNS
=====================
The program is customizable (BBS name, Sysop name, etc.) using a
configuration file. The Sysop's name is not displayed until the
product is registered (Hint Hint). Details of the configuration file
are listed below.
This program is assumed to be running under Mustang's Wildcat!
versions 1.12 or later. It depends on a file called DOOR.SYS (older
WC! versions use CALLINFO.BBS), as specified in the Wildcat!
documentation, to exist. The configuration file contains a pointer to
this file so it can be located anywhere in your system (and need not
be called DOOR.SYS).
This program may work under other BBS systems that provide a similar
user definition file. You may create a file of your own that will
accomplish the same thing. Or contact Triskelian Simulations for a
custom version that copes with the file structure of your BBS.

================
NO DEMO VERSIONS
================
This version of Orion Outreach is fully functional. There are no DEMO
versions, etc. However, until it is registered their are some things
you and your players will have to put up with. Your players will have
to put up with a "guilt screen" each time they enter the game. They
also will not see the BBS or your (the sysop's) name on the initial
logo screen. Once the program is registered you will be able to
manipulate the sysopable features (e.g. TEAMS, PROBES, and ION STORMS
[see the Player's Guide to make sense of that comment]) to generate a
truly custom installation.
==================
GETTING REGISTERED
==================
What could be easier! Fill in the form at the end of this document.
Add a check or money order for our registration fee. Put them both in
a stamped envelope and mail to the address given below. Remember the
stamp: the Dead Letter Office does not register Triskelian Simulations
products.
We will send you back an almost totally impersonal form letter. This
piece of literature will express our deep appreciation for your
contribution and tell you we know you are alive. Oh yes, it will also
include your registration number. Enter this registration number in
your configuration file (see description below) to complete your
registration (and kill the guilt screens, etc.).

DISTRIBUTION KIT
================
Orion Outreach is distributed as a ZIP of fourteen (14) files. Orion
Outreach should always be distributed as ORIONxxx.ZIP (where xxx is
the revision number). Normally the files must be installed in the
same directory where Orion Outreach will run (otherwise strange and
not so wonderful things will happen). The exceptions are the report
and BBS caller info files (see discussion on configuration files).
DOORXX.BAT - A sample startup batch file for ORION.
ORION.BYE - A sample Orion Outreach exit message file. This file
may be customized using any standard editor.
ORION.CFG - A sample Orion Outreach configuration file.
ORION.DOC - Our eloquently worded Players Guide (a.k.a The
unabridged version of ORION.HLP). Orion Outreach is
sufficiently complex that all players should read this
in their own defense. This file should be made
available for players to download.
ORION.EXE - Orion Outreach compiled to run on any IBM-PC
compatible. This program requires the ANSI.SYS driver
be installed to run properly. Graphics and math
coprocessor chip are NOT required.
ORION.HLP - Player online help file. Orion Outreach is designed to
be straight forward and easy to play. This should be
enough to get players started.
ORIONBBS.DOC - The eloquent document you are presently reading.
ORIONLGO.BBS - Many sysops prefer to have a "teaser" to pique users
interest in a new game. This advertisement is intended
to fill that need. This file uses only standard ASCII
and it may be placed anywhere (it is for the sysops
benefit, not the programs!)
ORIONLGO.SCR - Another "teaser" for Orion Outreach. Similar to
ORIONLGO.BBS but requires the ANSI.SYS driver be
installed to display properly.
ORIONMNT.EXE - The daily maintenance program. This may be run as a
scheduled activity or included in the standard DOORnn
batch file (as in the sample DOORXX). It must be run
ONCE before users play the first time.

README.1ST - A text file pointing the Sysop in the right direction.
If you've gotten this far -- you don't need it!
README.2ND - A little plug for TECHLINE BBS, Triskelian Simulations
online support BBS. Stop by, and tell'em we sent ya!
REGISTER.FRM - A spare registration form. Help support shareware (and
shareware authors!)
WHATS.NEW - A short text file outlining recent changes to the
program.

==========================
OTHER ORION OUTREACH FILES
==========================
THE ORION OUTREACH MAINTENANCE (ORIONMNT.EXE) PROGRAM *MUST* BE RUN
*BEFORE* ANY PLAYER TRIES TO USE THE GAME.
This will create the other game files and initialize the player
database. Two types of files are created: the component database
files and the report files. The database files, which are all named
ORION???.DAT, will always be created in the local directory (the
directory where Orion Outreach is running). The report files will be
created (and named) depending on the contents of the ORION.CFG file
you have specified. By convention, the standard ASCII report files
are given the extension *.BBS. Their more colorful ANSI dependent
counterparts are given the extension *.SCR.
The player's daily log file is ORION.LOG and the sysop's error log is
ORION.ERR. Both of these files are automatically truncated down to 2K
bytes if they exceed 4K bytes.
Database Files
--------------
ORIONFLT.DAT - Fleet database.
ORIONGAM.DAT - Game data file.
ORIONMAP.DAT - Map database.
ORIONPRB.DAT - Probe database.
ORIONSYS.DAT - Star system database.
Special Report Files
--------------------
ORION.ERR - Orion Outreach error log file. Orion Outreach will make
an entry in this file each time something of interest to the Sysop
occurs (I/O timeouts, dropped carriers, new players, etc.). All
internally detected errors (e.g. file open errors) get thrown in here,
too. The file may be deleted at any time, it will be automatically
restarted and/or truncated as needed. This file uses only standard
ASCII. The players have no access to this file.
ORION.LOG - Orion Outreach daily log. This file is updated each
time a player does something of interest to other players. The file
may be deleted at any time, it will be automatically restarted and/or
truncated as needed. This file uses only standard ASCII. The players
may view this file from the Orion Outreach main menu.

==================================
CUSTOMIZING THE CONFIGURATION FILE
==================================
The configuration file is used to define certain BBS specific items
for the Orion Outreach program. The file can be named any valid DOS
filename (although Triskelian Simulations recommends avoiding such
overused filenames as COMMAND.COM and CONFIG.SYS!). The default
configuration filename is ORION.CFG.
The configuration file must contain at least fourteen (14) lines.
Each line must be exactly as described below.
SAMPLE ORION.CFG FILE
---------------------
Techline ;line 1 - BBS name
Jerry Brown ;line 2 - Sysop's name
0 ;line 3 - Registration Number
2 ;line 4 - BBS publisher/version code
C:\WC\NODE1\DOOR.SYS ;line 5 - Full pathname to caller info
D:\WC\BULL\BULL54 ;line 6 - Full pathname for report file
D:\WC\BULL\BULL55 ;line 7 - Full pathname for winners list
ORION.BYE ;line 8 - Full pathname for exit msg file
3 ;line 9 - Plays per day
20 ;line 10 - Default time limit
FFFFFF ;line 11 - Game options mask
2 4 4 2 3 12 ;line 12 - Th'rax control info
30 ;line 13 - Turns till auto-recycle
19200 ;line 14 - Modem speed control
BBS and SYSOP Names (line 1 and 2)
----------------------------------
This is more or less self explanatory. The SYSOP's name is not
displayed until the product is registered. One word of caution: enter
your BBS name *EXACTLY* as shown on your Triskelian Simulations
Software Registration form! The security algorithm is not case
sensitive (that means it can not tell the difference between an "A"
and an "a"), but it gets real persnickety about blanks and other
characters it does not expect.
Registration Number (line 3)
----------------------------
This is your Triskelian Simulations Registration Number. You will
receive a different registration number for EACH program. The number
is included in the nifty almost totally impersonalized form letter you
receive as a reply to your registration fee. Enter the number
*EXACTLY* as shown in your letter!

BBS Publisher/version code (line 4)
-----------------------------------
This warns the program about weird configuration files, etc. by
indicating what BBS system is being used. The following table
indicates supported values:
0 Wildcat! version 1.12 or 1.13
1 Wildcat! version 2.0
2 DOOR.SYS style systems: Wildcat! version 3.0, GAP, RBBS, or
PCBOARD 14.5
3 DORINFOx.DEF systems: QuickBBS, SuperBBS, MajikBoard, Remote
Access
BBS INFO FILE PATHNAME (line 5)
-------------------------------
This is the complete specification for where the program can find the
BBS information file. Note that since this is the *COMPLETE* file
specification you must give at least the filename (typically DOOR.SYS
or CALLINFO.BBS). The file could be called JONES.BAT, just as long as
you specify it here. This line CANNOT be blank and must not exceed 72
characters.
REPORT FILE PATHNAME (line 6)
-----------------------------
This is the complete specification for where you want the report file
created (or updated) and what you want to call it. The file contains
a listing of the active players and their relative strengths.
There are two versions of this file. The first version contains only
standard ASCII characters and has the extension *.BBS. The second
file contains an ANSI graphics snapshot and has the extension *.SCR.
You must NOT specify a file extension. This line CANNOT be blank and
must not exceed 72 characters.
WINNERS FILE PATHNAME (line 7)
------------------------------
This is the complete specification for where you want the Orion
Outreach Winners file created (or updated) and what you want to call
it. This file contains a chronological list of all Orion Outreach
winners. If the file becomes too large -- just delete it. The
program will restart it. The file may also be edited with any
standard ASCII editor.
There are two versions of this file. The first version contains only
standard ASCII characters and has the extension *.BBS. The second
file contains an ANSI graphics snapshot and has the extension *.SCR.

EXIT MESSAGE FILE PATHNAME (line 8)
-----------------------------------
This is the complete specification for where you want the program to
find the Exit Message file. The exit message file is displayed to the
user when they exit the program. It is a nifty place for advertising
your BBS, asking for contributions to help register your program, etc.
Note that since this is the *COMPLETE* file specification you must
give at least the filename (the default is ORION.BYE). If this line
is blank then no exit message will be displayed. This line must not
exceed 72 characters.
PLAYS PER DAY (line 9)
----------------------
In the example above each player is allowed to access the game 3 times
in any given day. If you want to allow each player to access the game
only once per day, simply place a 1 on this line. To allow unlimited
plays per day merely change this value to -1. Default is 3 plays.
DEFAULT TIME LIMIT (line 10)
----------------------------
Each player is given the minimum of this default time limit or
remaining logon time. This guarantees that the player will be dumped
back to the BBS before his logon time expires. Default is 15 minutes.

GAME OPTIONS MASK (line 11)
---------------------------
Each Triskelian Simulations product allows internal options to be
enabled or disabled by the SYSOP. These are referred to as
"sysopable" features (we know, that word should never be in the
dictionary). For example, the PROBE option could be disabled if you
feel it detracts from the game. Until the game is registered you are
stuck with the standard option selection: everything ON!
The following options are sysopable in Orion Outreach:
Option Flag Description
--------- ------ -----------
BASE 000001 Bases
BHOLE 000002 Black holes
IFF 000004 IFF (applies to smart mines)
LOG 000008 Log all user accesses
NOVA 000020 Nova (catastrophic)
PLASMA 000010 Plasma torpedoes
PROBE 000040 Probes
REPAIR 000080 Repair of ships
RIP 000100 Dead players allowed to restart
SELF 000200 Self-Destruct
STORM 000400 Ion Storms
TEAM 000800 Teams
VIRGIN 001000 New Player protection
WARP 002000 Warps (natural)
WORM 004000 Worm holes
ALIAS 008000 Players may use an alias
CAPTURE 010000 Capture attacks
DISCOVERY 020000 Discovery messages
ECM 040000 ECM ships (and effects)
NEBULA 080000 Nebulas
TEAM2 100000 Banish/Transfer Team commands
JUMP 200000 Warp ships
x2 400000 spare
x1 800000 spare
All values are in hexadecimal (that means 0-9 get followed by A-F).
Just add the flag values for all the options to be enabled. For
example: BHOLE, IFF and PROBE would be 000023 hex; REPAIR and PROBE
would be 0000C0 hex; LOG and MISSILE would be 000018 hex.
If you are not sure how to use the option mask feature just enter
000000 (six zeros) or FFFFFF (six F's). All zeros will turn OFF all
optional features. All F's will turn everything ON.
If you need to accomplish a specific combination, but think that
hexadecimal math refers to some sort of obscure pagan ritual, leave
Triskelian Simulations a message on our support BBS (we talk about
that somewhere towards the end of this document).

TH'RAX CONTROL DATA (line 12)
----------------------------
Orion Outreach contains a computer "player" -- the Th'rax Hegemony.
This line in the configuration file is used to control how viciously
the computer plays. To activate (and aggravate) the Th'rax use values
based on the descriptions below. Some combinations will result in
strange or unpleasant results (for the players, that is).
The unregistered game will play the Th'rax in "2 0 4 2 3 40" mode.
This translates to two large fleets that will zoom around aggravating
any established players unfortunate enough to be encountered.
This line must contain six integer entries to work properly. The
general form of the line is: val0 val1 val2 val3 val4 val5. Only the
first six values are processed.
VAL0 is the number of Th'rax groups. This translates to the number of
fleets that will show up. This number must be in the range [0..15].
Entering zero means they don't show up!
VAL1 is the delay, in game turns, between the Th'rax detection message
ans the actual arrival of the Th'rax fleets. This number must be in
the range [0..21].
VAL2 is the scale factor. This is a direct multiplier of Th'rax fleet
size. This number must be in the range [1..5].
VAL3 is the Th'rax action mode:
0 Sessile (does not even move!)
1 random movement
2 pursuit
VAL4 is the Th'rax battle mode:
0 avoids everything (will not initiate attacks)
1 avoids virgins (if OPTION_VIRGIN selected)
2 Attacks anything it finds
3 Finds things to attack, especially for revenge
4 Kill! Kill! Kill!
VAL5 is the number of sectors each Th'rax fleet can move per game
turn. This number must be in the range [0..100]. Obviously, a
movement of zero means even a rabid Th'rax fleet cannot attack
anybody.
To deactivate the Th'rax entirely enter six zeroes on this line:
example: 0 0 0 0 0 0

TURNS TILL AUTO-RECYCLE (line 13)
---------------------------------
If you want the game to recycle automatically after a given number of
turns, simply place that number on this line. On the scheduled date
the leading PLAYER (not team) will be awarded victory. Unregistered
games will always recycle after 15 days.
To allow unlimited plays until victory is reached by one of the
players merely change this value to -1. With a value of -1 the game
will continue playing until:
A) All players are eliminated by the Th'rax. This should never
happen, but might. (See the discussion on second option
word).
B) One player eliminates all the others.
C) One team eliminates all non-team members. Victory will be
awarded to the team in the ORION winner's file.
MODEM SPEED CONTROL (line 14)
-----------------------------
Some BBS systems operate with the modem communicating to the BBS at a
different speed than the modem communicates to the user. This can
cause numerous side effects, all unpleasant. Modem Speed control
allows the communications port to be maintained or "locked" at the
current speed setting, ignoring the speed settings for the user.
To ignore this feature (the default), simply enter a minus one (-1) on
this line. To enable this feature enter the baud rate to be used on
this port (valid selections are 300, 1200, 2400, 9600, or 19200).
BBS systems which use a DOOR.SYS style caller information file usually
specify what the desired port rate is, in addition to the actual
connect rate. Orion will use this speed setting as a default.
====================
SYSOP STATUS DISPLAY
====================
Under normal conditions a status box will be displayed on the BBS
console while Orion Outreach is active. This screen identifies the
program, revision, etc. It also identifies the active user, port,
baud rate, time the door was activated, and amount of time remaining
until the door is closed.
If an alarm condition occurs (user drops carrier, I/O timeout, and
other fun stuff) an appropriate message is displayed.
==========

SYSOP PLAY
==========
To play the game simply enter "/SYSOP" on the same command line as
ORION.EXE. This will cause the program to come up in local mode at
the BBS console. You can then run the program just like any of the
other players. The program will take your name from the specified
ORION configuration file and use that for your player name. Remember
not to put "/SYSOP" on the line in your normal DOOR batch file! Sysop
mode always goes to local console I/O.
EXAMPLE: DOS> ORION <configfile> /SYSOP [CR]
=========================
ORION MAINTENANCE PROGRAM
=========================
Orion Outreach daily activities (revising databases, etc.) are
performed by the maintenance program, ORIONMNT.EXE. Triskelian
Simulations recommends that it be included in the normal door
activation batch file (see the example file DOORXX.BAT). This program
may also be run as part of a scheduled system event or executed
directly from the keyboard.
EXAMPLE: DOS> ORIONMNT <configfile>[CR]
Several sysop options are also available using ORIONMNT. There must
be a space between the configuration file name and the option. Also
the option must be proceeded by a slash (/) so the program can figure
out which is which. The various options are listed below.
EXAMPLE: DOS> ORIONMNT <configfile> /<option> /<option>[CR]
Where <option> can be:
INIT - Restart game, no winner selected.
RECYCLE - End current game, award winner, start new game.
REPORT - Regenerate ORION player reports.
SYSOP - Forces output to local BBS console.
UPDATE - Force ORION game daily maintenance.

** PLAIN ENGLISH VERSION **
Triskelian Simulations guarantees this program sort of works. Then
again, it may not. You got it for free, if it doesn't work -- TOO
BAD. What do you think this is, a toaster?
** NOW FOR THE GOOD NEWS **
If you think all that dreck sounds scary, try facing a product
liability lawsuit sometime! Triskelian Simulations does make an
effort to maintain and upgrade its products. If you detect a problem
(with the program, not the authors) send us a line ASAP. (That stands
for something like PDQ.) We will do what we can to fix the problem as
fast as we can. Another suggestion is to check our support BBS. You
may find that a revised version is already being tested! (Are we
efficient, or what? Hmmm. Never mind, forget we asked...)

ENHANCEMENTS
============
Triskelian Simulations truly welcomes any and all suggestions (Why
does that always seem to surprise people?). Feedback from users is the
only true way of finding out what needs to be improved, what
enhancements can be added, or what new products we can produce. Even
if it's only an idea for a game we are more than willing to hear it.
Send comments, suggestions, complements, etc. to the address on your
registration form or call our support BBS and leave a message.

USER SUPPORT
============
Orion Outreach is a user supported "shareware" program. You may copy
it for free and share it with your friends on a "try before you buy"
basis. A nominal fee (not to exceed $5.00) may be charged for
reproducing disks to distribute this product. However, you may NOT:
modify any of the files in any way; sell any of the files for profit;
or include any of the files as part of a commercial product.
If you enjoy this program we request that you become a registered
owner. Triskelian Simulations maintains several software products.
Owner registrations are our best way of telling which programs users
really want (and by coincidence the ones we put the most effort into
upgrading). To become a registered owner simply send your totally
non-deductible fee of $20.00 (cash, check or money order) and the name
of the program ("Orion Outreach" remember?) to:
Triskelian Simulations
630 Washington Avenue
Hoquiam, WA 98550
To make registration easy for you, we have attached a form at the end
of this document. Are we helpful or what?
Registered owners can sleep the sleep of the just, knowing in their
hearts that they have saved another group of starving software
developers from a life of gainful employment. Registered owners are
happy, well adjusted people, who are loved by all. Registered owners
may make lots of useful upgrade suggestions and receive a personalized
computer form letter in response. Registered owners are entitled to
free* upgrades! (* well, for a slight handling fee.) To receive your
free* upgrade send us a blank floppy disk and a prepaid mailer *OR*
$5.00 and a blank floppy disk *OR* send us $7.50 and we will send you
someone else's floppy disk (as soon as we get a few)!
If you don't like the program, send us your floppy disk (the one with
the program on it), a note telling us what you disliked, and $25.00 in
small, unmarked bills. We promise to read the note (well we promise
to consider reading the note [well, actually, if we START to read the
note, but we don't LIKE the note, well, we wouldn't necessarily read
the whole note, now would we?]) We DO promise to spend your money,
